Today’s Giveaway: Gluten-free on a Shoestring

glutenYou don’t have to rely on packaged gluten-free foods to enjoy gluten-free meals. That’s the premise behind Nicole Hunn’s “Gluten-free on a Shoestring” cookbook. To win one of two copies we are giving away, see below.

Hunn is the blogger behind the Gluten-free on a Shoestring blog, who changed her family’s eating habits when she discovered her second child had celiac disease and was unable to absorb gluten.

Whether you’re new to eating gluten-free and fear that the creative foodie part of your life is gone forever, or you’ve been gluten-free for a while and have resigned yourself to lowered expectations and expensive, store-bought gluten-free foods that leave you cold, help is on the way. Everything’s going to be just fine.

You’ll find 125 gluten-free recipes for dinners, desserts, comfort foods, and much more. In the middle of the book, there are mouthwatering photos of meals. I got my eye on the spinach pie. Another recipe I’d like to try is for Focaccia bread.

Hunn has a tip box on almost every recipe showing how much money you are saving. A gluten-free loaf of bread would cost me $16.47 to buy or $3.77 to make. That’s a $12.70 savings!

There are so many bread recipes in here that, gluten-free or not, you’ll still enjoy this cookbook if you’re a bread lover like I am.

To win a copy of “Gluten-free on a Shoestring,” leave a comment sharing why you’d like to win this book. Winners will be revealed tomorrow, June 17. You can also win one of 8 copies we are giving away as door prizes at Frugal Festival Food! on June 25 in LA.

  2. I would like to win this book for my sister. Her two kids have food allergies so it would be handy for her to have this recipe book.

  3. I am a culinary student at community college and I hope to go on with my studies to become a nutritionist. I would love to have this book so I can help people like my elderly neighbor. She is having problems with her immune system and, thus, with healing from a back surgery which is being made worse (according to her doctor) by a gluten intolerance. She’s on a fixed income so she hasn’t been able to make much headway with a diet change because of the expense. I used to bring her food from school but it’s amazing how many things we cook with even just a smidge of wheat flour. I would use this book to help her and her daughters come up with a menu of inexpensive foods she’ll like that are gluten free.

  4. Would love to have some gluten free recipes and I LOVE breads!

  5. I have been gluten free for about 10 years. Back then most people did not even know what “gluten free” meant. As we are on a budget it would be wonderful to learn new options for my family and myself. Thank you.

  7. I recently discovered my intolerance to gluten. I also discovered how expensive gluten-free items are. Yikes! I would love a good cookbook that can teach me how to cook gluten-free, and save money as well.

  10. I have been gluten free for six months and can tell a real difference for my body. But it isn’t always easy especially if you are watching your food budget. There is a new Gluten Free store which opened near by. I was thrilled UNTIL I saw their prices. I felt like I just walked into a Beverly Hills store!. I would love to read this book. I know it is possible to eat Gluten Free on a budget and could really use some other choices.

  13. My Godmother has celiacs and when we have her over for dinner it blows our budget. I have started making some gluten free items but even then I am spening a lot on ingredients not normally in my pantry. I would love to learn how to spoil her when she comes over without spending a lot of money.

  14. I would love to win a copy of this book to give to my friend who was diagnosed with Celiac’s disease in the last year. She has a very difficult time finding gluten free food and she is also recently a vegetarian. Couple that with the expense of gluten free food and the fact that she’s a working single mother of twins, I know she would absolutely LOVE this.

  15. My mom needs this book! She has a casein allergy and now a newly diagnosed wheat allergy and is having so much trouble figuring out what to eat. Thanks for the chance!

  16. A friend who has always cooked for a large family whose primary cuisine is Bolivian has been informed by her doctor that she is gluten-intolerant, and must learn to cook in a new way. She’s having serious problems dealing with this, as her husband has become totally spoiled by her catering to his culinary desires. I think having a copy of this book might help her find a way to cope with this latest health issue… at least, I truly hope so, as she’s such a kind, caring person.

  17. Thanks for a fun giveaway! It’s so nice to know that there are more and more recipes for normal and delicious foods that are gluten free!! Yay! Even if I don’t win the book…I’m planning on getting it on Amazon 🙂

  18. After being recently diagnosed with a gluten intolerance, I am struggling to find yummy meals to prepare for myself and my family. A lot of the gluten-free prepared meals are super expensive and out of my price range. I would love to win this book in order to learn a bit more about gluten-free meal options and ward of the negative symptoms that come with eating gluten riddled foods.

  26. Wow! What can I say to stick out here? Hmmm my husband is having problems losing weight we think it’s an intolerance to gluten but he hasn’t been diagnosed. It’s just not in our budget to buy a book. It would be great if we could win it and I would be happy to pass it on :o).
